Project Hail Mary Review: Ryan Gosling’s Space Epic Is a Thrilling, Heartfelt Journey Among the Stars

There are few types of films that spark my imagination more than space exploration. Sweeping cinematic views of the cosmos awaken my endless wanderlust and seeing those vistas on the biggest screen possible feeds my mind in ways I can’t fully explain.

That’s exactly what Project Hail Mary accomplishes.

Watching this film feels like stepping directly into deep space alongside Ryan Gosling, navigating the unknown, discovering new wonders, and contemplating humanity’s place in the universe.

A Sci-Fi Adventure With the Spirit of The Martian

In Project Hail Mary, Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a scientist sent on a desperate mission to save Earth from a mysterious microbe that is slowly consuming the Sun.

Grace wakes from a long, induced sleep aboard a spacecraft light-years from home with little memory of how he got there. As the story unfolds, the film jumps between Grace’s current situation in deep space and the events on Earth that led him to this mission.

The movie is based on the novel by Andy Weir, the same author behind The Martian. Screenwriter Drew Goddard returns as well, giving the film a similar blend of science, suspense, and humor that made The Martian such a hit.

You could easily call Project Hail Mary a spiritual successor — capturing the same sense of wonder while taking audiences on a completely new interstellar adventure.

Rocky: One of Sci-Fi’s Most Memorable Alien Characters

During his mission, Grace makes a startling discovery: he isn’t the only being trying to solve the cosmic crisis.

Enter Rocky.

Voiced and puppeteered by James Ortiz, Rocky is an alien working toward the same goal of saving his own species from the same threat.

What makes Rocky especially impressive is how the filmmakers chose to bring him to life.

Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller could have easily relied entirely on CGI. Instead, they use practical puppetry for most interactions between Rocky and Grace, with limited digital enhancement.

The result is pure movie magic.

In an era when green screens dominate big-budget filmmaking, the decision to use physical effects gives Rocky a remarkable sense of presence and authenticity.

Ryan Gosling Delivers One of His Best Performances

This may be one of the finest performances of Ryan Gosling’s career.

Ryland Grace is not your typical heroic astronaut. He’s awkward, often overwhelmed, and reacts to extreme situations with very human panic and uncertainty. That relatability makes the character instantly compelling.

Ironically, someone named “Grace” often handles high-stress moments with anything but grace and that contrast adds humor and charm throughout the film.

Gosling fully commits to the role, balancing comedy, vulnerability, and determination as Grace races against time to save humanity.

A Visual Experience Made for the Biggest Screen Possible

If there’s one piece of advice I can give about seeing Project Hail Mary, it’s this:

See it on the biggest screen you can find.

Our screening was presented in IMAX Digital, and the scale of the visuals truly makes you feel like you’re floating in deep space alongside Grace and Rocky.

Some theaters are even presenting the film in rare 70mm IMAX, which should make the experience even more immersive.

The vast cosmic environments, spacecraft interiors, and alien worlds are breathtaking when projected at that scale.

A Long Runtime That Flies By

Clocking in at 2 hours and 36 minutes, Project Hail Mary could easily feel like a chore.

Instead, the film moves at an engaging pace, constantly revealing new mysteries and discoveries that keep the story moving forward.

I never found myself waiting for something to happen. The narrative kept me invested from beginning to end.

Final Verdict

Even if space-themed films aren’t normally your thing, Project Hail Mary manages to bridge the gap between grounded human storytelling and epic science fiction spectacle.

The flashbacks to Earth help keep the story emotionally anchored, while the deep-space adventure expands into something truly awe-inspiring.

The film delivers suspense, humor, emotional moments, and ultimately a hopeful message about cooperation and humanity’s ability to overcome impossible odds.

In a time when the world could use a little optimism, Project Hail Mary arrives at just the right moment… reminding us that sometimes the biggest solutions come from working together.
