What to Watch This Weekend: Toy Story 5, Supergirl & Summer Movie Reviews

It’s been a busy June for movie releases so we thought we’d give you the rundown of the latest flicks you can catch this weekend as you escape the heat into the icy cold local cineplex.

First up is DISCLOSURE DAY

Now, I’m always down for a good Spielberg movie and this one is a true return to form for the story-telling king of film. Disclosure Day stars Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor as two unwitting participants in an extravagant top secret government coverup about the truth around UAP’s, or Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon. As Daniel (O’Connor) is already on the run to spread his truth to the world, having escaped from the secret government entity run by Noah Scanlon (Colin Firth), he discovers the existance of another person with deeper knowledge of the secret – Margaret (Blunt), a local Kansas City weather anchor. They are directed through their escape from Noah by a mysterious man named Hugo Wakefield (Colman Domingo). The long and short of it is that this becomes an action-adventure film full of exciting chase sequences and government espionage. It’s much more about ‘getting away and doing the right thing’ than it is about aliens…however, that payoff is here too with a climax that had our screening audience gagged through the final act. I haven’t been to a movie this year that had completely captured an audience the way that ending did. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Next, TOY STORY 5

It’s about time that Jessie (Joan Cusack) gets her own Toy Story film in the franchise! A fan favorite for a long time, Jessie is still happily existing with Bonnie (Scarlet Spears) and all the other toys… but stays in touch with Woody (Tom Hanks) via walkie-talkie. Woody is still happily out in the universe resucing abandoned toys with Bo Peep (Annie Potts). What makes this story so interesting is the coming-of-tech-age story that we’re presented with. It’s hard to find a child these days of Bonnie’s age that isn’t glued to the screen of an iPad or other electronic device. That’s the crux of our story here – the toys against tech. The overall message of the film is to focus on the physical rather than the virutal experiences that toys can offer. On Jessie’s mission to separate Bonnie from the tech toy that’s ruining her social life, she runs into other forgotten tech toys like the scene-stealing Smarty Pants (Conan O’Brien). The adventure has several twists and turns… and so many Buzz Lightyears (Tim Allen) that you will lose count. But it makes for an incredible Toy Story and I’m glad we’re still getting original stories with messages that remind us to “touch grass” as some might say. It’s a solid entry in the Toy Story franchise and I would recommend catching it soon. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Take a ride on STOP! THAT! TRAIN!

It wouldn’t be Pride Month without a movie that brings all us gays together… and STOP! THAT! TRAIN! is for sure a film that will have us all laughing together. I didn’t expect a lot from the film, to be honest, but there are so many incredible cameos by your favorite Drag Race stars and allies like Joel McHale, Jane Diane Raphael, Guy Branum, and even Sarah Michelle Gellar… you just can’t take a wrong turn with this film. Directly in the spirit of Airplane! without being a rip-off, STOP! THAT! TRAIN! is hilarious in its own right. It follows the story of two defunct railway service attendants (Ginger Minj and Jujubee) that end up getting hired at the “fancy” train company that’s already run by a trio of snooty queens (Brock Hayhoe, Symone, Marcia Marica Marcia). The film is packed with in-jokes from RuPaul’s Drag Race that fans will instantly adore and cackle over, but even if you don’t watch that show – you will be cackling yourself from the countless sight gags and snappy one-liners. President Judy Gagwell (RuPaul) gives us the hope of a better future and jumps in as our sassy train team is hurtling toward disaster… a Stormaganza! Don’t worry about what that is… it’s silly and this film knows it… placing so many insane situations in front of you, you won’t know what to laugh at next. It’s a real laugh riot and I can’t wait to watch it again. I know, it seems like it should be bad… but this film does everything right. It’s a real bright spot in the summer movie scene. Sashay to the movies! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

It’s a bird… it’s a plane… it’s SUPERGIRL

OK, as we all know, Warner Bros and DC Comics have had a rough history with reboots and re-imaginings of the DC Cinematic Universe, but with James Gunn at the helm, it seems like we might be on a solid path to superhero greatness out of the DCU with Supergirl. We first met Supergirl (Milly Alcock) in 2025’s Superman starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent, who reprises his role in this film. Supergirl Kara, tired of the pressures of having superpowers, has resigned herself to celebrate her birthday as normal as she can on a planet with a red sun – which prevents her powers from being active. She’s a messy drunk barely making it through life – the pressures of Super-world have certainly taken their toll on her. Good thing she has her trusty Krypto by her side – the scruffy mutt we found out Clark had been dog-sitting in the first film. The film has some rough patches and for the first half barely shows any action fights by instead focusing on other characters involved around the fight with blurry motion happening in the background. It wasn’t too distracting but was an interesting choice. Kara finds herself blazing a trail to find a bad guy after running into Ruthye (Eve Ridley) who is also seeking the same badguy, Krem (Matthias Schoenaerts). In what can be seen sometimes as a buddy comedy is also a battle between morality and mortality. What SUPERGIRL ultimately is, is the story of two young women finding their place in the universe. Finding where they fit in and where they belong in the world. To me, it felt like an early Marvel Cinematic Universe film where they’re laying a lot of groundwork and backstory to get us to a much larger story. Milly is perfectly interesting as Supergirl – an imperfect superhero, living in the shadow of her much more ‘together’ cousin Superman. She might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it works here and her personal demons work for the larger story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Truly, no matter what you choose to watch this weekend, you’re guaranteed to have a great time at the movies. You can’t really make a bad choice. Go grab that popcorn and enjoy the AC. We haven’t had a summer this good at the movies in years.
